The event is observed every year on 16th June. It is held in memory of about 700 children who were massacred in Soweto South Africa in June, 1976 during the then apartheid regime. They were killed as they demonstrated peacefully against the inferior education they were receiving from the racist regime.

The Women Enterprise Fund was launched officially on 26 May 2009 by H.E President Mwai Kibaki. The venue was Kenyatta International Conference Centre (K.I.C.C). There were simultaneous launches at all the Provincial Headquarters the same day. The Provincial Commissioners were Guests of Honor for these launches.

Theme - Mothers and Family: Challenges in a Changing World
May 15 is celebrated as the International Day of the Family. This day highlights the importance of families and aims at fostering equality, bring about fuller sharing of domestic responsibility and employment and work towards supporting families in the discharge of their functions. Thus the programs undertaken to commemorate the day to date have sought to promote the inherent strength of families, including their great capacity of self—reliance and to stimulate self-sustaining activities.

The World Orphans Day was first commemorated in New York on the 7th May 2002 and has been commemorated in other countries in subsequent Years. The day emerged as a call for international concern to the millions of children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. The aim of the day is to focus public and global attention on the plight and needs of Orphans and other Vulnerable Children (OVC). The day was first celebrated in Kenya in 2006 in Machakos District. Since then the event has been marked in the calendar of the department of Children Service.
