A Word from the Director
The setting up of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities in November 2004 which is aimed at benefiting PWDs is a milestone in the history of Persons with Disabilities in Kenya. The Council members and the secretariat have in the last one and a half years endeavoured to put in place systems and structures within which the Council will operate to ensure that the PWDs Act is implemented. Since we were set up, we have made a number of achievements some of which are outlined below:
- Identification of an office space and renovation,
- Establishment of a secretariat that is running day-to-day activities of the Council,
- Developing a Strategic Plan to guide the operations of the Council for the next three years,
- Development of a Human Resource Policy to guide human resource needs,
- Development of a Policy on Registration of PWDs, DPOs and institutions giving services to PWDs,
- Raising funds for Council activities,
- The Public Service Commission and Federation of Kenya Employers have been lobbied to implement Section 15 (6) of the Act on retirement at age 60. This has been agreed in principle with the Public Service Commission. Also agreed is the application process.
- The Council is continuing with lobbying of employing PWDs in both public and private sector.
As we lay the foundation systems and structure, we wish to call for your patience since Rome was not built in a day. We also wish to join hands with other stakeholders towards realization of a barrier free and disability friendly environment.
