The State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action has renewed its commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment during the Second Bi-Annual National Gender Sector Working Group (NGSWG) meeting held in Nairobi.

CS Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, who chaired the forum, emphasized the Ministry's dedication to transforming policy into action through robust partnerships and inclusive strategies. Immense progress has so far been realized under the President’s 9-Point Agenda for women, with a strong focus on mainstreaming gender across national development plans.

"We are walking the journey of gender equality with renewed energy and clarity of purpose," PS Anne Wang'ombe stated.

One of the major announcements was the anticipated launch of two landmark policies — the National Policy on Women Economic Empowerment and the National Care Policy. The former is set to unlock women's full economic potential, while the latter will recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.

A key theme of the meeting was the pending implementation of the constitutional “not more than two-thirds gender rule.” Gender players have called on Parliament and all stakeholders, especially male allies, to support its realization, urging the application of this principle across all sectors, including cultural and religious institutions.

The event also underscored the increasing role of women in Peace and Security, recognizing trailblazers such as Major General Fatuma Ahmed and Brigadier Joyce Sitienei, who have made outstanding contribution in the sector. Their appointments are a breakthrough in challenging gender stereotypes and promoting inclusive leadership.

In a landmark move, the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action unveiled two critical documents — the Gender and Climate Change Vulnerability Hotspot Mapping Study and the National Gender and Climate Change Action Plan (NGCCAP). These tools aim to integrate gender perspectives into climate action and disaster risk reduction efforts, with the establishment of a new thematic working group to oversee implementation.

PS Anne Wang’ombe urged stakeholders and development partners to remain steadfast in championing gender equality. “With your support, we will make huge strides in addressing the challenges afflicting our society. Let us commit, act, and deliver on our shared goals.”The event brought together representation from Foreign missions, senior government officials, and representatives from development agencies, constitutional commissions, county governments, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector.
